James Adolphus is a cinematographer engaged in making meaningful motion pictures films about social, cultural and political issues of global relevance.
Just before beginning his first year at the American Film Institute, Adolphus was the cinematographer on Sundance Channel's provocative and eye-opening documentary series BRICK CITY, winner of the 2010 Peabody Award, executive produced by Forest Whitaker and filmmakers Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin.
Slated summer of 2010, James is in pre-production on the anticipated independent feature film, AUGUST, which is based on the award winning short-film, POSTMORTEM, directed by Eldar Rapaport.
Adolphus continues his role as cinematographer and co-director of the on-going documentary OUTSIDE THE BOX, co-directed and produced by Lacey Schwartz. OUTSIDE THE BOX is one filmmakers personal exploration of her mixed-race identity that leads to an examination of an interesting and little understood subculture in America, black Jews.
Theatrically released in 2008, Adolphus was also the cinematographer of the award-winning Red Envelope Entertainment documentary, WITHOUT THE KING. Directed by Michael Skolnik, this film tells an astonishing story of Africa's last absolute monarchy, the Kingdom of Swaziland.
James Adolphus is credited for his role as cinematographer and producer on the documentary film, NEEDLE THROUGH BRICK. Set against the backdrop of Malaysian Borneo, NEEDLE THROUGH BRICK tells the story of survival of traditional art and culture in the face of a rapidly changing and modernizing world through the eyes of traditional Chinese Kung Fu masters.
James Adolphus is currently a cinematography fellow at the American Film Institute Conservatory.
